in the running

I was notified recently that I am a runner-up in the CQ20, or Creative Quarterly, to be published online in the fall. Very happy about this.

I started a Kickstarter account for a project on New Orleans!

new music: Here We Go Magic

last night we went to go see my friends Here We Go Magic play their record release show at The Music Hall of Williamsburg. War On Drugs opened for them. It was so much fun and I haven't been to that space since it was called North 6th, which tells you I spend a lot of time in the country and making sorbet at home. Check out their album, it's ridiculous.

overheard:

G train, May 7, 2010 6pm
12 year old boy: "I'm too tall for this train, I need a bigger train. I want to be tall for the rest of my life. I want to be a lawyer and get a job and a wife and twins. I'm going to name them June and August."

what to do about instant summer:

make ice cream.

I made this sorbet the other day....mint lime sorbet, super good, although maybe next time I will only use 3/4 cup of sugar. And today I made up a maple ice cream recipe - it's firming in the freezer now. can't wait. This is "Philadelphia" style, without eggs.

maple ice cream:
combine the following in a bowl and then pour into ice cream maker with a pre-chilled mixing bowl. run the machine for 30 minutes then put in containers in the freezer.
- 2 cups heavy cream
- 1 cup whole milk
- 3/4 cup grade B maple syrup
- bit of vanilla (scrape half a bean, or 1/2 tsp extract)
- 2 tsp fleur de sel or coarse salt

Wallingford continues...

I am loving what is happening with these pictures. Should I be flying down to New Orleans to photograph some oil? I think perhaps so...

poem, 1999

WHAT I LEARNED IN I.D.
A chair
can't stare.
It doesn't care.
Sit with me it cannot whisper.

It may have arms
And cushioned charms
But no embraces.

It's just a tool
A human foil
Set dressing for the human form.

You take your ass
and place its mass
upon a board.

It's just a bridge
on which you sit
to span the time
you work, or loll
or wait for someone.

(so you can tell I wasn't too excited about my Industrial Design degree....right school, wrong department. I don't regret a minute though, for so many reasons.)
